Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan Film Review

Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan, helmed by Sayantan Ghosal, offers an enjoyable cinematic experience. This film contributes to the growing trend in Tollywood for adventure and fantasy genres, incorporating captivating VFX sequences, an innovative screenplay, and a delightful blend of humor. Nevertheless, the plot follows a predictable trajectory, ultimately leading to a foreseeable conclusion.

In the film, Bimal (Parambrata Chatterjee) and Kumar (Gaurav Chakrabarty) come across a secret map that can lead them to an island where the mythical substance, Red Mercury, is abundant. This chemical can be the answer to the planet’s fossil fuel problems. Simultaneously, Ruby (Koel Mallick) also gets news of the substance, which she needs to cure a young girl.

The movie has the right masalas, especially in the first half. It introduces the characters, sets up the story and builds pace with flair. This is, of course, helped by the acting talent on display. Parambrata, Koel and Gaurav, as the three principal players, do a convincing job. There are also dollops of humour from Kanchan Mullick too, something most adventure films lack.

However, the second half lags. Not in pace, but in interest. This is because the audience can already tell what is going to happen and who will turn out to be the ‘villain’ of the film. The visual effects are impressive and Bengal films are making big strides in this area. Scenes of an underground lair, a glowing river and a giant wave chasing a boat are realistic. In the absence of budgets, they do not reach the level of Hollywood.

The technical departments are well taken care of. Thailand looks beautiful through the lens of DoP Ramyadip Saha and the music by Bickram Ghosh is in keeping with the adventurous theme of the film. The screenplay and dialogues by Sougata Basu are effective and not overtly ‘filmi’. Overall, an honest effort that younger audiences will appreciate more.
