PREM AMAR 2 MOVIE REVIEW
Story: The film tells an atypical love story of a boy and a girl who go against their families and friends to stick together.
Review: Prem Amar 2 is an unusual, and dreary, love story. For most of the film, it feels like old wine in a new bottle. But it has a killer ending — something not so common in Bengali mainstream cinema. But break new ground it does not. Because by the time you reach the end of its considerable runtime, you feel so tired and worn out that you don’t really care about what happens to the lovers.
It begins innocently enough with Joy (Adrit Roy) and Apurba (Puja Cherry Roy) meeting each other in college. And being the type of film that it is, they fall in love immediately. There’s no courtship, no dating; just instant 2-minute love. But immediately, there is friction too. Soumya (Sourav Das) a close, and treacherous, friend of Joy also falls in love with Apurba. But his is more of a ‘she belongs to me’, possessive kind of love. So, of course she chooses Joy and thus begins their unhappy journey of love.
And there is trouble at home too. The couple’s parents are dead set against the relationship for reasons that are so 90s that you’ll think you’re watching an old teleseries. In short, Joy and Apurba only face obstacles. There is no silver lining or sliver of hope. And that is the problem. It is a joyless and humourless movie. Regardless of the ending, the director (Bidula Bhattacharya) would have done well to lighten the mood a little in the first half at least. But there’s none of that. It’s just tears, doom and gloom all the way through. And like the many anti-tobacco and alcohol ads, after watching this, you could be forgiven for thinking that falling in love is injurious to health too!
