Kacher Manush Film Review

Kacher Manush brings together some of Tollywood's most bankable A-listers in a chaotic yet unassuming comedy centered around death benefits. While it may seem like an unlikely choice for a Pujo outing, the film could gain momentum during its second week when viewers are dealing with post-Pujo blues and the aftermath of festive overspending. While there have been other grim comedies exploring insurance-related scams, Kacher Manush takes a sensible and grounded approach to convey its sentiments, foregoing swashbuckling entrances or over-the-top shenanigans despite its impressive star power.

Dev portrays Kuntol, an unemployed man desperate for money to treat his paralysed mother. Prosenjit plays an insurance agent who not only entertains Dev's idea of faking his own death for the insurance payout but also actively aids him in his plan in exchange for a share of the money to treat his sister's heart ailment. While it may seem almost unbelievable, in a time of rampant inflation, a movie where money is the villain strikes a relatable chord.

The second half of the film introduces a significant tonal shift that some may argue takes away from its comedic edge. With a big plot twist just before the interval and a couple of shocking moments leading up to the climax, the film keeps the audience engaged. Dev's portrayal of a well-meaning but down-on-his-luck character is convincing, showcasing his versatility as an actor, as seen in Buno Haansh. Prosenjit is captivating as the scheming and desperate Sudarshan, clearly enjoying his role. The chemistry between the lead actors shines through, except when they are trying to kill each other.

The film could have benefitted from a shorter runtime and snappier editing. It could also have used fewer songs or even none at all, although Usha Uthup's "Chumbak Man" and Parvathy Baul's "Ke Bole Manush More" are wonderfully incorporated. There are moments of realistic humor and engaging banter between the two leads. In conclusion, Kacher Manush may make viewers wait but it doesn't disappoint, delivering an enjoyable experience overall.
