Jamai Badal Film Review

Jamai Badal revolves around Krish, son of advocate Gourisankar Chakladar, his BFF, Gunjan, and the misadventures that take place in their love lives. This film is a mystery. Not by genre, but by the intentions of its makers. What could have been a straightforward rom-com, is twisted, turned and complicated so much that it becomes a convoluted mess of a movie. It starts off simply enough, but by the end, it leaves your head spinning. The deceit and sleight of hand goes on and on and on.
Gourisankar Chakladar, a renowned advocate, has two sons — Harisankar and Krish. While Harisankar is a lawyer like his father, the younger one, Krish (Soham), doesn’t like working even though his father has given him a factory to handle and look after. Krish likes spending time with his group of friends. His leisure-filled life passes having fun with friends, especially Gunjan (Hiraan), whose aim in life is also to have fun and do absolutely nothing, just like his friend Krish. He has a girlfriend, Preeti (Paayel Sarkar), who is pressurising him to get married to her as soon as possible. Krish and Gunjan have the time of their lives, but undergo a sea change when Krish meets Barsha (Koushani Mukherjee) at a wedding and love happens to Krish without even blinking twice. What happens next is the crux of the story.
And one can guess what happens next simply by the title of the movie. Soham and Hiraan end up swapping each other’s partners to keep everyone happy. Or in the case of the audience, confused. The reasons for their deception are frail and clumsy. It’s as if the story creates these situations just because the script has it written, not because it makes sense or has logic. There is so much deception that it’s a miracle that the actors can remember who is deceiving whom and why.
Speaking of actors, it’s right up Soham’s alley. While the actor excels in his role, his act is getting a bit old and staid, having done quite a few of these comic capers in the recent past. Hiraan, Koushani Mukherjee and Paayel Sarkar are stuck in the maze created by the script and are barely able to come out of it. The music by Jeet Gannguli is entertaining, but does nothing to move the film forward.
Overall, this is your typical Ravi Kinagi movie. The kind of movie where people profess love after just one meeting. The kind where one has absolutely no clue about what is happening and why. It promises a lot but delivers very little.
