Movie Review
Before going to the positive or negative of the film, one thing I need to say. Sharadindu Bandapadhyay is one such author, whose writing style makes us easily visualise the incidents and the characters of his novel. As a result, viewers, have a specific image of Byomkesh in our mind. It is based on this image only, whether we are watching the movie or doing the review.
If I come to positive points of the movie based on performance, then performance of Shantilal and Rajatava Dutta deserve mention. One thing that needs to be mentioned here is that, the character of Byomkesh, in this movie is not modelled on Sharadindu's Byomkesh.
Here, Byomkesh is based on the director's vision. Byomkesh gives up smoking because his wife is expecting. This social message given in the movie is its second positive point. There are some beautiful aeriel views which make the movie visually appealing. Now if we come to some negative points of the film. Those of you who have read Ujwal Neel Moni, you will be knowing that apart from the usual nine rasas, there is another rasa called Siddha Rasa. Some characters, which we have imagined through ages, be it Ram Chandra of Ramayana or Bheem, Arjun, Nakul, Yudhishthir or Krishna; if we suddenly try to change their looks, it disturbs the viewers' mind. In this movie too, this look of Dev might disturb you. It depends on your perception.
Second negative point is that, there is no memorable speech in the film. Most of the sleuths of Bengali literature usually have a sharp speech. We do not get any such memorable dialogue from Dev. Not only him, most of the dialogues in the film lack dimension. They are quite flat. Coming to the third negative point. Owing to problem in script or direction, nobody's performance quite touches the heart as expected though we have all good actors here - starting from Ambarish, Dev himself, and others.
Look we all know, just as Feluda means Topsey, Holmes means Watson, similarly Bymokesh means Ajit. There is always un understanding between the detective and his assistant - sometimes the sleuth is giving a clue sometimes his assistant is giving a clue - there is always this little give and take between the two and suddenly a puzzle gets solved. But here in this movie, this understanding between the two is lacking. This is a big negative point.
Those of you who will watch the movie you will notice that here, instead of Ajit, Satyabati is giving many clues, solving many puzzles. No problem with that. Wife of an intelligent man will obviously be intelligent but in some place it doesn't look natural, it seems forced like the poem of Mohanlal in the War of Plassey.
In another scene, we see a door of a room and the clue to open the door is hidden under the tile of a floor. It is engraved on a stone slab. But how did Dev got to know that it was hidden there? He just removed the tile, solve the puzzle and opened the door. It is just mentioned once that he had stumbled there, but that is not shown clearly. This is one negative point.
Another important thing is that just as the movie begins, we see Dev decked up as Lord Shiva and fighting. But what is the relevance of this scene or what is its connection to the story, is absolutely unclear. And the fight that is shown, it looks like that of a commercial film. It did not seem to me, that Byomkesh was fighting but it seemed like Dev was fighting
Lastly coming to the technical part and the aspect of direction. See every time it is not the actors' faults. Sometimes there are some technical issues or maybe the director has designed it in such a way that it doesn't look good. I feel, here the director has lacked in many areas. The editing, colour gradation and BGM of the movie is nothing very outstanding.
Lastly, this is absolutely my opinion. If Dev had only produced this movie and had chosen someone else to act as Bymokesh, maybe the film could have reached a different height. Rest is your opinion. Do let us know in the comment box.
