Abhijaan Film Review

In the realm of Bengali cinema, Abhijaan stands as a moving tribute led by the illustrious Soumitra Chatterjee. This masterful film, directed by Parambrata Chatterjee, delves deep into Chatterjee's life, shedding light on both his triumphs and imperfections. Known as Bengal's last Renaissance man, the legendary actor has etched a remarkable legacy that will undoubtedly ignite the flames of inspiration for future generations. Reflecting on his captivating journey is enthralling, but it becomes an even more enriching experience when Soumitra Chatterjee himself takes up the role of our guide, leading us on a profound exploration of his multifaceted artistic persona. Tragically, Chatterjee passed away due to COVID-related complications just after completing the shooting for this biopic. However, his spirit lives on as he narrates his life story to Sanjoy, a doctor-turned-aspiring filmmaker, in this poignant and captivating piece of cinema.
In the captivating film "The Journey of Young Soumitra in Flashback," viewers are treated to a series of beautiful and poignant moments. It is within these turning points that we witness the immense growth of Soumitra's career, driven by his unwavering creative passion. Cinematographer Appu Prabhakar masterfully captures these significant milestones through dreamy sequences, seamlessly transitioning between the flashback and recaptured frames from Soumitra's classic films.

Director's astutely selects moments from Soumitra's past, allowing us to delve into the actor's journey as a politically conscious artist. We gain insight into his perspective on his star persona, the conflicts he encountered with co-stars, most notably Uttam Kumar, and the continuous internal struggle he faced as a cerebral and deeply creative individual.

"The Journey of Young Soumitra in Flashback" boasts an impressive ensemble cast, each depicting significant chapters of the legendary thespian's life. While Jisshu Sengupta delivers a commendable performance as the young Soumitra, the film does miss the opportunity to showcase Sengupta's transformation over time and age. However, this slight detracts little from the overall captivating experience offered by the film.
Parambrata Chatterjee shines in his role as an inquisitive admirer, deeply affected by his close association. His character, Sanjoy, grapples with his own complexities as he reflects on the artiste's philosophy of embracing life and all its rewards and dissatisfactions. This adds depth to the already content-rich film and portrays the direct enriching influence of Soumitra Chatterjee on his follower. Basabdatta Chatterjee effortlessly captures the essence of the young Deepa Chatterjee, while Sohini Sengupta delivers an endearing performance as their daughter, Poulomi Bose. The film's editor, Sumit Chowdhury, rightfully deserves credit for maintaining a compact length without compromising on the colossal content. Additionally, the visual richness of the film is brought to life by the skilled colorist, PV Mani Kumar.
